Infernal writings!

Ladies and Gentlemen, for the series"word illustrated", Ive decided to blow the dust of no less than...........The Scarlet Letter

"The vulgar, who, in those dreary old times, were always contributing a grotesque horror to what interested their imaginations, had a story about the scarlet letter [...]. They averred that the symbol was not mere scarlet cloth tinged in an earthly dyepot, but was redhot with infernal fire, and could be seen glowing al alight whenever Hester Prynne walked abroad in the nighttime".

The Catcher In The Rye.....

Ciao a tutti!!

Hi everybody!! Today, as you can guess, I got to like it, and this whole thing of illustrating passages of the books I love, is becoming a drug (I'd dare to say that this addiction is displacing the old one - aka Belle Epoque characters, from which, as you can notice, I'm almost recovered ;) ....)
Today.......we talk about The Catcher In The Rye.
Whoever hasn't read it yet (supposing that there's still some "Cauldfield-ian virgin" around), drag oneself along to the nearest bookstore and get it prompt. NOW.
Even though I think that if you don't read it from 14 to 17 years old, this book loses much of its poetry...Don't know why...Maybe the adults disown their inner Holden, or maybe he got them upset 'coz of ALL his where-do-the-ducks-go-in-the-wintertime-when-the-lake-is-frozen questions....
Anyway, with all those tender, whispered thoughts and those questions with no answer which nobody cares about, this book is even now, a great classic of a stray (and not) youth, who struggle to find its way...

" I'd never yell "Good luck!" at anybody. It sounds terrible, when you think about it."

Today I would dare to say that probably, the best-loved writer by the Italian students is Luigi Pirandello.
FIrst of all you study him when you're a senior and the compulsory reading of (at least) "The Late Mattia Pascal" makes you feel him slightly closer, second of all his brilliant literature ideas (which led him to a super-deserved Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934)...The result is everybody loves Luigi (or Gigi Piranda, as my Italian literature teacher used to call him in high school).
Specifically, I don't know you, but I'll always be grateful to that used bookstall where I got my copy of One, No one and One Hundred Thousands. One of those books that change your life (or....that make you finish it in an asylum because of your too many reflections upon identity...Well, that's a risk worth to be taken for Luigi!) ;)

"Of what I could be for me, not only you can't know anything, but not even me myself".

Tess of the d'Ubervilles

Today I'm posting an illustration I made of a book I loooooved: Tess of the d'Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy.
Ok, MAYBE the story is a BIT sad, but for its writing style and for the reflections that Hardy put in his characters' minds, this novel definitely deserves a summer reading! ;)

"She (Tess) was not an existence, an experience, a passion, a structure of sensations, to anybody but herself. To all humankind besides Tess was only a passing thought. Even to friends she was no more frequently than a passing thought. If she made herself miserable the livelong night and day it was only this much to them -"Ah, she makes herself unhappy."
[...] Most of the misery had been generated by her conventional aspect, and not by her innate sensations."

Elisabetta Gonzaga (1471- 1526)

The other day I was flipping through the pages of a tiny book about Raphael, you know? A short history, the images of the masterpieces...Well, pages after pages I got the idea of trying to stylize one of the unapproachable-to-mere-mortals works of the painter...And (please don't ask why), my attention got on Elisabetta Gonzaga....

Dante's Inferno..

io venni men così com'io morisse".

Today I'm lazy, so I decided to post a work a bit old, but really precious to me... My version of the 5th canto of Dante Alighieri's Inferno (the first part of the Divine Comedy). This part of the poem is about the love of  Francesca and Paolo (her brother-in-law) who committed adultery and got murdered. Their infernal punishment consists in being dragged together by the infernal wind forever, tormented by the memory of the time spent together.

"And all the while one spirit uttered this,
the other one did weep so, that, for pity,
I swooned away as if I had been dying".

Evergreen Alice!

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to"- said the Cat.
"I don't much care where - ' said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go" said the Cat.

How inspiration works...

A volte l'ispirazione ti coglie all'improvviso.

Sometimes inspiration catches you all of a sudden.
Sometimes (usually when you need it the most) you keep on looking for it, but no way you can drive it out.
Sometimes you get overwhelmed too fast in order to organize the ideas you just had.
Sometimes you THINK it's inspiration but it comes out it's just flu delirium.
However you look at it, often the ideas come1) without notice 2) without following a rational logic (nice circumlocution meaning.....they simply come AT RANDOM)...
Oscar Wilde said that the best way to resist a temptation is to surrender to it, and who knows...maybe he was right and we should learn how to submit to this inspirational-flood diktat.

I got THIS idea leafing through IO donna (italian fashion magazine)...

Sunset Boulevard

Do you know "Sunset Boulevard" by Billy Wilder? Well, if you don't, take note of it and insert it in the things-to-do-before-dying list, or just add it to the things-to-do-on-the-new-year list (yes by "new year"I mean THIS year) which I guess is lying mold somewhere in your bedroom....
Except that it's a just GREAT movie, it gives tons of causes for reflection..like on the life of the stars, on success itself...Actually, have you ever thought about the end of a celebrity getting forgotten? Or about the decline of the fame?
If that's the nature of your thinking ;), you should definitely watch it!

Joe Gillis: "You're Norma Desmond. You used to be in silent pictures. You used to be big".
Norma Desmond: "I am big. It's the pictures that got small."
